Iran has arrested 17 Iranian citizens accused of acting as spies for the United States Central Intelligence Agency, in keeping with the country’s Ministry of Intelligence.
An Intelligence Ministry document despatched to CNN claims Iran had damaged up a CIA spying ring and captured 17 suspects, all of whom confessed to performing as spies for the CIA.
“Defendants are serving their sentences in jail mentioning tempting guarantees of CIA officers together with emigration to the USA, a proper job in America, and cash,” the Intelligence Ministry document stated. It added that the spy mission was to gather classified data “from substantial centers as well as intelligence/technical operations.”
The ministry stated a few of the 17 will be executed.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged warning in response to the announcement. Talking on the Fox & Friends morning news show, he mentioned: “The Iranian regime has an extended historical past of lying … I’d take with a significant grain of salt any Iranian assertion about actions they’ve taken.”
The announcement comes amid a standoff between Tehran and Western powers following President Donald Trump’s 2018 decision to withdraw from the nuclear deal and reimpose sanctions on Iran, and an accelerating sequence of latest maritime episodes, together with Iran’s seizure of a UK-flagged oil tanker within the Strait of Hormuz on Friday.
Underneath the heading “Destiny of Spies,” Iran’s Intelligence Ministry stated within the document: “People who consciously and intentionally betrayed the nation and refused to compensate for the losses have been handed over to the judiciary system.
